What is CBD?
Guest post by: Fahad Gilani
CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a chemical compound found in the Cannabis sativa hemp plant. It is the non-psychoactive component used in Hemp CBD oils and pet treats. On the other hand, its cousin THC is the psychoactive compound found in the Cannabis sativa marijuana plant. Junella Chin, DO, an osteopathic physician and a medical cannabis expert for cannabisMD states, “CBD is the non-psychoactive part of the plant, so what that means is [one] won’t have any effects like euphoria. [One] won’t feel sedated or altered in anyway.” Visit our History of CBD education center to find out more about the discovery of CBD.
Hemp vs Marijuana
Cannabis? Hemp? Marijuana? Are these all the same? Nope! Let us breakdown each of the terms. Cannabis sativa is a plant that has two primary species – hemp and marijuana. For example, it is how dogs and wolves are different breeds of Canis Lupis. They both grow differently too. The hemp plant is grown in a bamboo fashion between 10-15’ high for the stalks and seeds. While the marijuana plant is grown in a bush style in order to cultivate the leaves and cannabis flowers.
Both hemp and marijuana contain cannabidoil but there is a much higher percentage in hemp. Hemp CBD also contains very low levels of THC (less than 0.3%) compared to THC levels in marijuana. Marijuana is low in cannabidoil and contains 5-30% THC, the psychoactive component. Conversely, hemp is high in CBD and contains less than 0.3% THC in addition to being considered non-narcotic. To conclude, while hemp and marijuana come from the same plant, Cannabis sativa, but are very different in their contents.
Hemp CBD Oil vs Hemp Seed-Based Pet Products
Now, we must understand the difference between hemp seed-based products and hemp CBD Oil in terms of pet products. Due to being extracted from the seeds, hemp seed-based pet products do not contain cannabinoids. Although there are no cannabinoids present in hemp seed based pet products, the seeds are rich in nutrients that have many health benefits. Moreover, hemp seed-based pet products contain various types of fatty acids including Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) plus antioxidants and phospholipids. As pet parents it is important to note these products do not contain cannabinoids unless specified.
Hemp CBD Oil, or CBD oil for short, does contain cannabinoids and less than 0.3% THC. As pet owners, it is very important we must make sure all CBD given to our furry friends contain less than 0.3% THC. Unfortunately, higher concentration can be dangerous for our pets. If you believe your pet as ingested marijuana or any derivatives of highly concentrated THC then please visit the Pet Poison Helpline website immediately.
