How to make your own CBD oil

Extracting CBD or other cannabinoids using high-proof food-safe alcohol is a safe and quite simple process.

Using this method, a patient should be able to produce potent medical CBD oil with no special equipment or skills. Grain alcohol leaves no harmful or unpleasant residue in the extraction, and it is considered the best solvent for the production of small batches of edible cannabis oil.

HERE IS THE RECIPE

Ingredients:

  • Around 30g of ground buds or 60-100g of ground, dried trim or shake
  • grain alcohol or other food-safe, high-proof alcohol

Equipment:

  • Glass or ceramic mixing bowl
  • Fine strainer, such as cheesecloth, sieve, or nylon stockings
  • Catchment container
  • Double boiler (a set of two fitted saucepans or pots that are stacked together with space between them)
  • Wooden spoon, silicon spatula, funnel, plastic syringe

PROCEDURE

Arrange your equipment with no hurry and make sure your working area that is all clean and set up before starting. Completely cover the plant material in the mixing bowl with alcohol and stir for 3-5 minutes with the wooden spoon to expel the resin. Be sure the bowl can easily contain both the raw material and the solvent.

Filter the liquid into the sieve and collect this first raw extraction into the catchment container, squeezing out as much liquid as possible. The stirring and filtering process can be repeated with a new batch of solvent to extract as much compounds as possible from the plant matter.

Pour the strained liquid into the double boiler and heat until it begins to bubble. Let all the alcohol evaporate without increasing the temperature. Keep the heat at minimum or turn it on and off appropriately, since the mixture has to keep gently bubbling for about 15-30 minutes. Keep stirring and don’t let the liquid get too hot. As the alcohol evaporates, mix the solution and scrape the bowl with the silicon spatula.

Now it’s time to skillfully transfer the concentrated oil into a storage bottle or dosage containers before it gets too thick cooling off. It is possible to draw the CBD oil into plastic syringes or put it into small, dark, airtight containers.

Dosages can be portioned off by squeezing small amounts of oil out from the syringe, or by using toothpicks and small spoons. The CBD oil extraction with the grain alcohol method is a safe process, and its products are perfectly suitable for ingestion.

Most of natural CBD extracts are thick and concentrated, and their quality largely depends on the raw material used. They can be diluted with olive oil or coconut oil or other vegetable oils at the end of the process, when the extract is still warm, resulting in excellent topical ointments for local skin applications.
